Brief History

Methodism began in Rosyth in 1916 through the work of a Methodist Chaplain based in the newly establish Naval Dockyard. A wooden Church and Institute were opened in 1917 and by 1920 there were about 100 members, a Sunday School of over 300 and other activities. However 5 years later the Admiralty placed the Dockyard on a 'care and maintenance' basis only, the work force was greatly reduced and the wooden church building was sold. It seemed that the Methodist Society would close, but thanks to the determination of a few of the members, part of a farm steading was leased for services and the work continued.

A new church was built and opened in 1934. The Dockyard and Naval Base took on more workers, among them Methodists from southern English dockyards. The Methodist church prospered and the premises were now too small. Thus a new suite of premises was built in 1970 and the work continued to expand reaching its peak around 1985.

With the downgrading of Rosyth Naval Dockyard in 1996 and the withdrawal of the Naval Chaplains, members of St Margaret's Episcopal Congregation were invited to share the Methodist building. A Covenanted Partnership between the two congregations was signed in July 2000.
